One of My Favorite Quotes...

“The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both.”

2010 Ocean Beach Street Fair/Festival

This past weekend was a busy one. There were many things to do in this town I call home, San Diego. And this post is about the Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off Festival on Saturday, June 26th 2010. It was some last minute planning, but decided to make the trip out there to try some chili and listen to some bands play. So, here are some photos...

Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off Festival on Saturday, June 26th 201

There were lots of things to do and see. Things that range from live music and entertainment, rides, showcased talented artists, vendors, a refreshing beer garden, the chili cook-off, and more. So why not come right? Well, it sure seems that a whole bunch of people thought the way we did and flocked from all corners of San Diego to make a day in Ocean Beach. But my plan was to basically hit-up the chili cook-off to taste some awesomely delicious samples. Click on the images for more photos of the event...

I forgot where the next photo (below) of some chili came from, but this was my favorite. It must be the cilantro that sang to me. I just love cilantro! I was surprised how my body reacted to the chili's in general. I don't take spices well and tend to sweat a bucket when I do. Well, I did sweat, but not as much as I usually do. We've tried a whole bunch of them and still had extra tickets that weren't being used. But alas, it was time for some regular food, or at least dessert. And you know me, I love me some dessert. The dessert above is from Chunk-n-Chip Cookies. On their tent, is says "artisan ice cream sandwiches...with warm cookies. YUM!!" And YUM it was. I had the "Mumbo Jumbo", chocolate brownie and peanut butter cup ice cream. It tasted so good in this warm weather even though there was an overcast. The sun started to pop out around this time. And our timing was perfect. But then again, ice cream and cookies are great anytime.

I wanted to take more photos, but when you're having fun, you tend to forget the camera that's hanging around your next. At least that was the case for me. Also, the crowds started to get bigger and that made it a bit harder to take some photos I wanted to get. I had a great time and can't wait for 2011 Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off to begin. So, I'll be there next year, for sure...

Dinner: Sushi Deli 3 in Kearny Mesa/SD

What's for dinner? Sushi's for dinner. This time our destination for sushi is Sushi Deli 3 in Kearny Mesa, San Diego. It's one of our favorite spots for cheap/inexpensive sushi rolls and a place to see a great variety of people enjoying the same food you came to eat. Besides, where else can you find beer for 99 cents to go along with your food? I don't know of any other place besides them...

Dinner: Sushi Deli 3 in Kearny Mesa/San Diego

We didn't want to get there too late. The last time we went there, there was a pretty long line. We ended waiting about an hour to get a table. This time we planned ahead and got there a bit early, around 7:30pm. Getting a table was going to take some time. We were prepared for this, but basically got the hook-up from the hostess and were seated to our table in no time. Kind of felt bad for the others waiting. But as the saying goes, "sometimes you win some, sometimes you loose some". This time we won...

I wanted something different to drink than beer. I took a look at the "Special Drinks" menu and the "Samurai" cocktail caught my eye. The Samurai cocktail is Soju, Sake and lime juice. It sounded good and gave it a shot. When the drink came, I really didn't expect it come in a martini glass. I was thinking a ball glass, but oh well. No joke, I finished that bad boy in 3 sips and then was looking for another drink. The 99 cent beer was in order. Then we ordered our sushi rolls...

Dinner: Sushi Deli 3 in Kearny Mesa/San Diego

After eating some light meals during the day, I was pretty hungry and ordered three rolls. The first is a San Diego Roll. The whole roll battered and cooked tempura style. Inside is a lobster mix with cream cheese. On top is spicy tuna, crab surimi, crunchies with spicy mayo, spicy sauce and sweet sauce. My favorite of the bunch tonight...

Dinner: Sushi Deli 3 in Kearny Mesa/San Diego

My second sushi roll is the Lobster Deluxe Roll. The Lobster Deluxe has lobster mix, crab surimi, lettuce, cilantro, asparagus, avocado, jalapeno and gobo carrot. What did it for me was the cilantro. Oh man, I just love cilantro. Another person in our group got this as well...

Dinner: Sushi Deli 3 in Kearny Mesa/San Diego

My third sushi roll is the Super Dragon Roll. The Super Dragon Roll's inside is shrimp tempura, crab surimi, cream cheese, avocado. It's topped with eel and sweet sauce...

Dinner: Sushi Deli 3 in Kearny Mesa/San Diego

The other sushi rolls that were ordered are the Dragon Roll, which is very similar to the Supper Dragon Roll. The Dragon Roll is shrimp tempura, crab surimi and cucumber. Topping the roll is ell, avocado with sweet sauce...

Dinner: Sushi Deli 3 in Kearny Mesa/San Diego

Then we got the Katie Roll. The Katie Roll is shrimp tempura, cream cheese, avocado and salmon. Pretty basic, but it tasted pretty good...

Dinner: Sushi Deli 3 in Kearny Mesa/San Diego

The last picture is the Hot Hot Dynamite Roll. It was the last order to arrive our table. It may be because it needed to be baked. The Hot Hot Dynamite is the same as a Dynamite roll, but baked with spicy mayo on top. It has crab surimi (imitation crab and mayonnaise) and lobster mix (lobster, mayonnaise and smelt roe). The plate presentation wasn't as presentable as the other sushi rolls, but at least it tasted pretty good. And really, that's all that matters...

Dinner: Sushi Deli 3 in Kearny Mesa/San Diego

We also got the Philadelphia Roll. But didn't take a picture of it. I think we all know what a Philadelphia Roll is and what it looks like. To be honest, I just plain forgot to take a photo of it. I think everyone was waiting for me to hurry up and take a picture of them as our mouths started to water. So, I rushed it. Maybe next time...

I'm not one of those guys who really nitpick sushi rolls. You know, snobs. I'm not that guy. Sushi Deli isn't the greatest sushi in San Diego, far from it. But they do offer one of the cheapest rolls out there, including the specialty rolls and to me, it's hard to beat. And they do get busy, so prepare for it. It can also be a bit loud in there if that's not your thing. And the biggest issue is parking! You might have to do some walking if you come during the busy hours. We just park in the Taco Bell parking lot. Besides that, I really like Sushi Deli and will continue to come back.

And as usual, I got to thank my BlackBerry for saving the day. I never leave home without. It's the reason why I have something to blog about, otherwise I would be experimenting new things without any visual content to share. And I'm a visual type of guy and I have to make it happen. Anyways, happy eating...

Dinner: Dave & Busters in San Diego

Headed over to Dave & Busters in Mission Valley/San Diego, to do a little celebrating for my brother for dinner. See, good things do happen to good people. Decided to go here to take advantage of the early happy hour (9pm-11pm) that they had. I busted out the trusted BlackBerry and started snapping away. Funny thing was, everyone basically had the same meal. So, here it goes...

Dinner: Dave & Busters in Mission Valley/San Diego

Again, took advantage of the happy hour and got me a Crown and Coke instead of beer this time. Actually several of them and boy did that hit the spot. The waiter made some mistake and gave me an extra glass for free and I that appreciated. So, that deserved a good tip...

We ordered the Grilled Chicken Nachos for the appetizer and boy was that a bust. We were expecting your regular style nachos. You know, the ones with have a pile of tortilla chips and all that goodness topping it off. Instead, we got these gourmet style nachos?!?! What the hell! These were eight (8) individual tortilla chips that were topped off with the goods. I got so caught up on how bad they messed up the basic concept of nachos was, I forgot to snap a picture of it. Don't get me wrong, it didn't taste bad, but it also wasn't great either. It was just not worth it in my opinion...

Dinner: Dave & Busters in Mission Valley/San Diego

Now for the entree. I usually don't order burgers when I go out to eat. I rarely do. But when I visit Dave & Busters to grub, I can't help but order the Dave's Double Cheeseburger with fries. Double meat and double cheese. Everyone got the same thing with slight modifications...

Dinner: Dave & Busters in Mission Valley/San Diego

And for dessert, we went with the Frosty Mug Cookie Sundae. One for each person. I really don't know why I ordered this as I was already stuffed. But I did it and ate most of it. The mug is a 24 ounce mug three large scoops of vanilla ice cream served with chocolate syrup, whipped cream and candied pecans. It's also topped with a cherry and a chocolate chip cookie wedge. It was your average sundae, nothing too spectacular, but more importantly cured my sweet tooth for the time being...

Dinner: Dave & Busters in Mission Valley/San Diego

We also got the D&B Power Cards. We didn't use them. I'm not much of a gamer, so it'll sit in my wallet collecting lint. Left sooner after the meal was done and man, I haven't been that full in a long time. Until next time, happy eating...

Snacks: Costco's Braided Apple Strudel

With me loving desserts and snacks, it would only make sense to share a photo of the day that just screams yummy. And that perfect candidate would be Costco's Braided Apple Strudel. A great snack to enjoy when you just want that extra break during the day or night...

Snacks: Costco's Braided Apple Strudel

This delicious snack can get a bit soggy for some folks and may even be flaky. But for me, the taste is what matters and boy does it have good taste. In fact, just enough and not too much...

Snacks: Costco's Braided Apple Strudel

Don't you just love my fancy paper plates? HAHA! In general, I love eating strudels. And this braided apple strudel is no exception. It may not be the best I've had, but you do get a lot more for your money. Or maybe I'm just not a great critic. But, who cares as long as my stomach is happy. Which it is. So, happy eating...

Snacks: Assorted Mini Fruit Jelly Treats

With the summer in full swing and parties popping up on a regular basis, these Assorted Mini Fruit Jelly are a huge hit. For me, these jelly treats are even a hit even if there's a party or not. I just love these things. SO GOOD! Basically a childhood favorite of mine and it seems a favorite with all kids these days too...

Snacks: Assorted Mini Fruit Jelly Treats

Snacks: Assorted Mini Fruit Jelly Treats

As I said, they make a great dessert or snack at anytime. And for me, all the time! A handful too. They're sweet, light and delicious and packed full of wonderful fruit flavors. In this package, there's quite a few flavors to choose from. Unfortunately the flavors aren't listed, but they're all good and you can go wrong with either of them...

Snacks: Assorted Mini Fruit Jelly Treats

Snacks: Assorted Mini Fruit Jelly Treats

The Mini Fruit Jelly is one of those snacks if your are not careful, it can get messy when trying to open/remove the top cover. It's very similar to regular Jell-O only smaller. Some people use a spoon to eat them. I on the other hand pop the whole thing in my mouth. They're small enough for me to eat it whole, while others may find it difficult. What can I say, I have a big mouth... man are they delicious.

Dinner: BJ's Restaurant @ La Mesa/SD

Last night, had some late dinner at BJ's Restaurant in La Mesa/San Diego in the Grossmont Shopping Center. This is the usual Plan B spot when figuring out other places to go to becomes too much of a chore. Besides, it's a pretty chill vibe and has ample amount of customers to do some people watching...

 Dinner: BJ's Restaurant @ La Mesa/San Diego

Grab a pitcher of beer (Harvest Hefeweizen) to wet the palette and to make myself comfortable before the food arrives. Here's the description taken on their site..."Not just another wheat beer. Our Hefeweizen is fermented with authentic Bavarian weizen yeast to produce its unique flavor profile - fruity, spicy, and refreshing. Try it without a lemon!".

 Dinner: BJ's Restaurant @ La Mesa/San Diego

I wanted something pretty light and ended up getting the Grilled Shrimp Tacos. Taken off their site..."Chargrilled shrimp wrapped in our special tortilla with chipotle mayonnaise, Santa Fe dressing, Napa cabbage, carrots, red onions and cilantro. Served with tortilla chips, avocado cream sauce and fire-roasted tomato salsa". An this really did hit the spot for me...

 Dinner: BJ's Restaurant @ La Mesa/San Diego

Then here's the other entrees from our table... the BJ's Mini Barbeque Chicken Pizza. "Hickory-smoked BBQ sauce, red onions, seasoned tomatoes, cilantro and BBQ Chicken breast".

 Dinner: BJ's Restaurant @ La Mesa/San Diego

BJ's Parmesan Crusted Chicken. "Our marinated chicken breasts coated with Parmesan cheese and crunchy Panko bread crumbs, lightly pounded and pan fried to a golden brown. Served with white cheddar mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli and topped with a lemon Chardonnay butter sauce, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh basil and Parmesan cheese." For some reason this dish is always being ordered no matter what group of people I'm with. It must be that good. Got to try this next time...

 Dinner: BJ's Restaurant @ La Mesa/San Diego

And of course, there's dessert. We went with BJ's Famous White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Pazookie. "You’re never too old to enjoy our freshly baked, hot out of the oven, rich and delicious cookie topped with two scoops of vanilla bean ice cream and served in its own deep dish.Your choice of Chocolate Chunk, White Chocolate Macadamia Nut, Peanut Butter or Oatmeal Raisin Walnut.". We usually don't get dessert after having dinner. Maybe that's because I'm usually too stuffed when it's time to have them. But, I had a light meal and had this sweet tooth I needed to take care of that I've been having all day. The Pazookie took care of that for me as well as the others...

Photo's taken with the trusted BlackBerry Bold 9700, never leave home without it...

Visualnewbie: Earthquake Survivor

Well, there's a whole lot of shaking going on in the San Diego region. Ever since the big Easter Sunday quake in the Mexicali area, I would say we've been getting these noticeable aftershocks at least once a week. More than our fair share to say the least. I've lived in San Diego basically all my life and the last few months since Easter took up more than half of all earthquakes I've experienced. Pretty crazy...

Cold Drinks at Tea Station, San Diego

With the weather in San Diego being, what's that word? Awesome! Having a cold drink to sip on out on the patio while people watching is in order. With that said, the next stop for some boba would be Tea Station in Kearny Mesa...

Cold Drinks at Tea Station, San Diego

So, we had three drinks on order. From left to right: Iced Flavored Almond Milk Tea, Iced Flavored Thai Tea and Flavored Lychee Jelly Ice. All with the option of having boba, which we did get...

Cold Drinks at Tea Station, San Diego

My drink is the Flavored Lychee Jelly Ice and I loved it. I tend to get these fruity flavored drinks, cause I like my drinks sweet. For some, these may be a bit too sweet. But, good enough for me. HAHA! I've tried the Passion Fruit and Strawberry flavored ones. And you can't go wrong with any of them. At least for me you can't...

Lunch: Sushi at Hanaoka, National City

Well, this lunch isn't actually recent. It was sometime last week that I now found the time to post and share. This particular lunch is from Hanaoka Japanese Restaurant in National City. I haven't had sushi in some time and then was the perfect moment to have some with good company. So, we had our select dishes to-go...

Lunch: Sushi from Hanaoka Japanese Restaurant, National City

Lunch: Sushi from Hanaoka Japanese Restaurant, National City

The sushi rolls above are the Crunchy Roll (shrimp tempura, crab and tempura flakes) and the Caterpillar Roll (eel, crab, avocado with sweet sauce). We also ended getting some Shrimp Tempura for variety. Not much of a variety, but it'll do...

Lunch: Sushi from Hanaoka Japanese Restaurant, National City

The image below shows the Philadelphia Roll and California Roll in one box and the Baked Scallop Roll (crab, avocado and scallop) in the other. The Baked Scallop Roll happens to be my favorite out of the rolls we bought. But the others were a close second. Man, I'm such a bad food critic. I just love food. And that ranges from your typical fast food joints to your high-end restaurants. It was just so damn good!

Lunch: Sushi from Hanaoka Japanese Restaurant, National City

Lunch: Sushi from Hanaoka Japanese Restaurant, National City

Needless to say, I was stuffed and so were the others. If you're interested in giving this place a shot, check out their site at Hanaoka Japanese Restaurant for more info. As the saying goes, "Yummy in the Tummy". That is all...

Snacks: Babycakes' Cupcakes, San Diego

It's no secret that I've developed this taste for all things sweet. And cupcakes are no exception. I just love them small treats. Especially the ones from Babycakes in the small community of Hillcrest near Balboa Park in San Diego. I've tried many and so far, the cupcakes from Babycakes are my favorite. But make no mistake, I have a few more places to try to get my sugar fix...

Snacks: Babycakes' Cupcakes, San Diego

Instead of being adventurous by trying other different flavors, we went with the tried and true. Red Velvet and Carrot. You can see the photos above and below in the cardboard box. HAHA! I had to hurry up and take the photos because the natives were getting restless. As soon as one came out, it was eaten like there's no tomorrow...

Snacks: Babycakes' Cupcakes, San Diego

Snacks: Babycakes' Cupcakes, San Diego

I wanted the Red Velvet cupcake. I just love that flavor. So I was able to somewhat photo shoot the dessert out of the box. Check out the awesome China Plate I was using. It's called Styrofoam plates. Only that it isn't actually China, but probably made in China. HAHA! It was such a rush job as I just couldn't wait to stuff my mouth. It wasn't a pretty sight, but boy was it pretty damn good! And that's all that really matters in the end...

Lunch: Church's Chicken Original

Here's what was for lunch at the Communicating Ideas Headquarters. Church's Chicken Original Chicken. Now, I know this isn't the healthiest food to have, but that's why it is important to workout and exercise so that you don't have to worry too much about the little things and enjoy life a bit more...

Lunch: Church's Chicken Original

I was only able to eat a couple. After a couple, the oil and grease starts to get to me. Good thing I had rice around to go with the chicken...

Lunch: Church's Chicken Original

With all that said and done, it got me well fed and energized to get more work done. It's not the greatest chicken I've had, but it'll do. Heck, that's three posts in one day and plenty of day left to do more. In the real world, I would only be able to post once or twice a week if I'm lucky and have plenty of extra time left.

Candy: Hawaiian Host MacNut Crunch

We get gifts shipped out to us from long-time family friends every once and awhile. Heck, they're basically family to us. And one of those gifts we tend to get are those yummy Hawaiian Host boxed candies from Hawaii. Love these delicious treats!

Candy: Hawaiian Host MacNut Crunch

Candy: Hawaiian Host MacNut Crunch

I'm used to the regular Chocolate covered Macadamias. So the MacNut Crunch, Chocolate Covered Macadamias & Crisp Rice is a welcome change. Man, I'll tell you. I just found out that I couldn't contain myself to just one. My self control is really pathetic. But to be honest, I really didn't care. That stuff was so good...

Candy: Hawaiian Host MacNut Crunch

Candy: Hawaiian Host MacNut Crunch

As much as I loved these. I loved the traditional ones more. The simplicity in the original candy is what made them so great. It was perfection in my eyes and especially in my taste buds. But that wouldn't stop me from getting my handful of these sweet chocolate treats straight to my mouth.

Snacks: Puto Bumbong, Filipino Dessert

Puto Bumbong is bamboo steamed glutinous sweet rice cake with purple food coloring and coconut and sugar. Other than that, I really don't know much about this delicious snack other than that it's damn good and one of my favorites. And that it's a Filipino dessert that we buy every once awhile when we get those irresistible cravings...

Snacks: Puto Bumbong, Filipino Dessert

Snacks: Puto Bumbong, Filipino Dessert

Here's a side note to ponder. "Puto" means steamed glutinous rice and "Bumbong" means bamboo cannon, which it is cooked in...
