It's hasn't been that hot the last few days, just pretty humid. Too humid for my likings. But the weekend and most of last week was pretty terrible. The heat was really getting to me and I'm not alone in feeling this. Sometime last week, it was so hot we needed to find a way to cool down. And one of the best ways to do this when I was a kid was to either make or buy some Halo Halo...
So, buying some Halo Halo it is. We bought the Halo Halo from Conching's Cafe in National City. I feel they have one of the better Halo Halos out there. What is Halo Halo? Well, straight off Wikipedia, "Halo Halo is a popular Filipino Dessert that is mixture of shaved ice and milk to which are added various boiled sweet beans and fruits and served cold in a tall glass or bowl". They explained it better than I could...
The Halo Halo definition is as basic as you can get. But you can get really creative with it like the Conching's offerings. The Halo Halo is Conching's signature dessert. It's mix of shaved ice and milk, combined with various beans, fruits, gelatin and custard (leche flan). And then topped off with your choice of ice ream. The one's in the pictures are Ube (purple yam flavored ice cream), Buko Pandan (coconut flavored ice cream) and mango. I got the mango. Other flavors that are available are Mais-Queso (corn and cheese flavored ice cream), avocado, and cashew.
Eating the Halo Halo really did help me cool down. For a moment, I forgot all about the heat up until the last sip. And even then, the feeling wasn't as miserable as it was before having this delicious dessert. My core temperature went down to a more comfortable level. And that made me a happy man. Anyways, it's one of my favorite Filipino snacks and frankly, I can't wait to have another one. Until then, happy eating...

One of My Favorite Quotes...
“The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both.”
