One of My Favorite Quotes...

“The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both.”

Five Guys Burger and Fries, Point Loma

Checked out Five Guys Burger and Fries at the Liberty Station shopping complex in Point Loma/San Diego over the weekend for the first time. I believe that they just opened up at least for a few months. I always wanted to check the place out since the new thing these days are burger joints like the SmashBurger in Mission Valley and Burger Lounge. After eating at SmashBurger, I really wanted to go to Five Guys to do some sort of comparison.

If you've never been to Liberty Station, the complex takes on the image of the old NTC (Naval Training Center) buildings of the yesteryears. A place I'm familiar with when I was a kid. They also take that minimal signage to a whole new level. From the outside, you just see a small clean sign on the building. In the halls you see another small clean sign near the door to the restaurant's entrance. If it wasn't for that sign, you'd never know what was in there and just pass it by. Check out the pic above. As you open the door and enter, it's like a whole new world. And there was already a pretty long line to begin with and a packed house. Even outside on the outdoor patio. From the door to the cashier, was about 15-20 minute wait. Not too long. There's also sacks of potatoes between the line and the dining area. Up from near the cashier are some free peanuts in their shells for free while you wait and for you to take to your table. It's a trip cause you can see the floor littered with the shells. Apparently, you just leave the empty peanut casings on the floor as you eat. Since I'm Filipino, I didn't do that but I admit I did try. That's just awkward. HAHA! It must be that culture thing. Some photos here may show a glimpse of it you look real hard. More pics here...

As soon as you order, you seat yourself and listen for your number to be called. When you get your order, it comes in a paper bag. The photo below shows a picture of the paper bag starting to show the oil/grease leaking through. Kind of strange right? Well, it's the ungodly amount of Large Cajun Fries that they gave us. It seems like they gave us a large cup of fries and packed it as shown in the photo. Then they just add a whole bunch of extra fries by throwing it into the bag on top of our other orders. CRAZY! We had to rip the bag apart to get to it. More pics here...

For our meals, we got some Bacon Cheeseburgers and the Bacon Cheese Dog. The burgers and dogs come wrapped in this aluminum foil type wrapping material. I must say, the Bacon Cheeseburger was pretty damn good. Very flavorful with each bite. We just about added all the toppings available for the burgers. So, it was pretty tasty. The Bacon Cheese Dog looked good, but since I didn't try that, I can't comment on that. But really, how can you mess that up. More pics here...

To be honest, I could of done without the bacon. You pay a bit more and there wasn't really that much. The bacon flavor gets lost in the cheese burger that's already packed with flavor. End the end, it didn't really add anything to the burger. The fries were excellent, but seasoned very liberally. I needed to use ketchup to lighten it up a bit. Just thought I might warn those who have sensitive taste buds that they are heavily seasoned.

How does this compare to SmashBurger. I will say that they are just different. Both are really good and offer different things to the table. Both are about priced the same. SmashBurger has more on the menu, while Five Guys is more simple, but more complicated than In-N-Out. I would say that Five Guys is an in-between a In-N-Out and SmashBurger. In fact, it does have that In-N-Out dinner feel to it as you can see in the photos.

Let's just say, I will be back for more and can't wait. It's a place to add to the food rotation to mix it up every now and then. But I also wouldn't go out of my way for it either. Until then, happy eating...
