One of My Favorite Quotes...

“The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both.”

Sandwiches at La Torta Cafe in La Mesa

Here are some photos of some sandwiches my brother and I had at La Torta Cafe in La Mesa, San Diego. I had one of those coupons waiting to be used and figured why not. It was my first time seeing and eating at La Torta Cafe and really didn't know what to expect. I was also not that hungry, but wanted to try some place new. Little did I know, these sandwiches turned out to be huge. But first, here are a few photos of the shady front patio, where we decided to sit and eat. It was a bit too warm for me inside.

I ordered the Super Natalia's Torta. It's roast beef, ham, turkey, jack cheese, cheddar cheese, bacon, beans, jalapenos, avocado and the works. The meal comes with home fries. As you can see, the sandwich is large and half would have been fine for me. The sandwich is great, with great flavors and the fries were awesome. In the end, I ate about half of the second half of the sandwich and barely made a dent in the fries.

My brother got the La Torta Special. Its turkey, bacon, melted cheddar cheese, avocado and the works. It also comes with home fries. Even though it's smaller than my sandwich, my brother also had a hard time finishing it.

I still got an extra coupon to use at La Torta Cafe and I'll definitely be back to try out the other sandwiches that they have. I'm totally satisfied. I must also say, their menu has to be one of the largest I've seen to date. There's something for everyone and I'd be surprised if you couldn't find one that interests you. So check them out...

Mother's Day Dinner at Island Prime

I've been pretty busy with everything lately. And as a result of living and enjoying life, the blog tends to be put on hold. This really sucks, since I have a long list of places and things to write about. But I do have some time to talk about the three course prix fixe dinner I had with the family at Island Prime in Harbor Island, San Diego on Mother's Day before it's too late. Yup, I know, almost a month ago. Let's start with a photo of the view we had of downtown San Diego and a shot of the interior...

I really dig Island Prime. I have always liked that location and the awesome view of North Island and downtown San Diego and of course, the bay. The restaurant's large windows' facing the bay is a great selling point to say the least, especially like a day like this. As we enjoy the view, we each got some bread and spread. I love the bread even though it was a bit messy. The spread they provided was fine, but I love plain old butter and would have been happier with that instead.

After the bread, we were brought the amuse before the first course. It's Manchego Cheese with dried fruit compote and fresh green apple. I know that amuse is suppose to be eaten in one bite, but damn was it such a tease. It was so delicious and I wanted more because it was so small. I wanted to order a whole platter of that as appetizers and call it a day. To give you an idea of the size, if you rolled up the cheese, a regular slice of sashimi would be more larger and fulfilling. Crazy!

For the first course, we had three options to choose from. 1) Lobster Bisque. 2) Fennel Crusted Diver Scallop. 3) Roasted Beet Salad. No one picked the roasted beet salad. HAHAHA! I got the Fennel Crusted Diver Scallop with elephant garlic risotto with pancetta and basil oil. I really enjoyed the scallop and risotto and like the manchego cheese, it was a tease considering how light this first course meal was. I would have loved eating another two or three more pieces of scallops. But then again, I'm a big boy. Some of the others choose the Lobster Bisque with Spanish dry sherry and parmesan tulle. I didn't hear a complaint...

For the second course, we had six options to choose from. 1) Everything Crusted Ahi Tuna. 2) 10oz Slow Roasted Prime Rib. 3) Cedar Plank Roasted Salmon. 4) Blue Cheese Crusted 8oz Filet. 5) Maple Glazed White Marble Farms Pork Chop. 6) Free Range Chicken. I had the Free Range Chicken with fingerling potatoes, braised wild greens, lavender butter and banyuls demi reduction. I don't know what happened, but I don't have a photo of it. I guess I got excited and took photos of the other foods and forgot mine. Most times when I do order chicken, its either not enough of it or it's dry. Not here, it was excellent! And couldn't be happier and knew I made the right choice.

But I did get the chance to taste the Blue Cheese Crusted 8oz Filet with mashed potatoes, prosciutto wrapped asparagus. I've never tasted blue cheese and filet mignon together before, so this was a first. And to be frank, I'm sold! I love it! The other entree chosen was the 10oz Slow Roasted Prime Rib with mashed potatoes, sautéed baby greens and au jus.

Last but not least, the last course is dessert. We had two options and I had the Brownie Cheesecake with dark chocolate fudge sauce. Just like the other meals, I enjoyed this one as well. I'm really easy to please. Some of the others got the Pineapple Upside Down Cake with cardamom cream. Again, no complaints...

All in all, it was an awesome Mother's Day dinner at Island Prime. The meals were excellent as well as the service. The best part was spending the day with mom and the family with beautiful views of the San Diego bay thrown in for good measure.
